examination, as well as the related preliminary scientific undertakings made it possible for us to build up a clearer picture of the make-up of the wall. On the basis of this research one can break the wall down into three clear building periods. On the top of the wall it was possible to make out various levels, open corridors and related tunnels, a small medieval gateway, as well as a nearby buttress, upon which stood a tower-like construction. This amounted to an extremely unusual building and one as yet unknown in the architectural history of Eger Castle. The defensive features described above can be found in other 14th and 15th century castles, making dating of this particular phase straightforward. The clarification of other issues relating to it require further investigation. During the course of our intended investigation it became clear that we had come across the site of a small medieval gateway, complete with its fabric, building periodization, walking surface, mouldings and wall articulation. Although the structures occupying the inner wall and the openings still present problems, it will be possible to examine them in greater detail during the renovation of the wall surface. However, it may well be that we are dealing here with structures of more recent provenance. Unfortunately going eastwards towards the Sándor Bastion we were unable to conduct any further research on the gateway and the buttressing nearby as the earlier wall fabric had been totally destroyed when the bastion was constructed. 238
