making, elements of the spectacular, decorations, costumes etc. It is interesting to note how certain social changes have influenced the language and the tone adopted during the celebrations. During the course of the paper the author compares and contrasts certain phenomena like for example the legend, the tunnel, searching for treasure, the tree of remembrance and the way statues are put up etc. To end his paper the author looks at the way works of literature helped to promote and indeed institutionalise the cults at Szigetvár, Drégely and Eger by focussing on the places in question and the events for which they are best known. Miklós Znnyi's epic poem The Defeat at Sziget, Géza Gárdonyi's novel The Stars of Eger and János Arany's poem Szondy's Two Pages provided the means by which places and events became embedded in the national consciousness, becoming in the process fixed points of historical reference. 166
