KIRÁLY "Secrets Around Me... the world of Flowers" GÉZA GÁRDONYI AND HIS GARDEN Géza Gárdonyi was on the move a lot as a child and as a young adult, but following his successes as a writer he wanted to get settled in a home where he could spend his time studying, reading and working, while also providing a peaceful and safe environment for his family. In 1897 he moved to Eger to a refurbished cottage. Soon after he also purchased three acres of a vineyard in the plot above the cottage, over 360 square metres of the Mártonffy meadow, then he bought a 30-acre estate called Savós in the outskirts ofEger. The estate included some hills, valleys, meadows, a pine-forest, a summer cottage and an orchard. He finally realised his old dream ofhaving a country-house of his own. He planted a botanical garden around his house, which won the admiration of the people ofEger. They thought that Gárdonyi was a bit eccentric, because he was growing “useless” plants in this large garden. He often returned from his travels in Europe, for example from Turkey, Italy and France, with various plants to add to his garden. He was able to take his evening walks among fir trees, thujas, flowers and other ornamental plants, almost all of which he tended to himself First he acquired the necessary expertise from books and later he relied on his own experiences and careful observations to do his gardening. Gárdonyi made vital observations while tending to his garden. Birth and death, joy and sorrow, simplicity and complexity are all present in us humans just like in nature. For him nature was a creative medium. Looking after his country-house and garden was important for him not only for aesthetic reasons, but because shaping his natural environment and gardening also rewarded him with the joy of creation and led to many wise ideas. Just like in writing, in gardening he was also in pursuit of the journey itself the experience of creating something, the sacred fire, the ecstasy. Gárdonyi loved the creative process the most. His reason for working and writing was to experience the joy of creation. Géza Gárdonyi was a diverse, complex individual. Apart from writing, he was involved in many other things and areas of science. Everything he did, he did it with maximum devotion and precision. He chose his creative environment very carefully and his garden was also shaped to serve his creative process the best way possible. 23
