Castellan Miklós Zrínyi s Legacy from a Soldier’s Perspective

In 1966, on the 400th anniversary of the siege of Szigetvár, military historian Miklós Horváth reviewed Miklós Zrínyis actions as a castellan. In his view Zrínyi was not a good commander, which was the reason for eventually having to sacrifice his own life in order to save his honour. Although Horváths reasoning is mistaken for several reasons, it is still worth examining the personality of Szigetvár s hero and the process which led to his famous sortie, based on descriptions found in the sources. In my paper I wish to present the critical points of the siege and assess Zrínyis actions.
