Szabó The Strategy of Diversion and Distraction, and the 1663-64 Ottoman War (The Military History Background of the Zrinyi-Montecuccoli Dispute) In the 19th and 20th centuries experts discussing the infamous mid-17th century pamphlet debate between Zrínyi and Montecuccoli were inclined to identify theoretical differences between the strategical views of the two authors. Géza Perjés was the first researcher to examine the issue from a wider European perspective. He successfully proved that the two military leaders had actually shared the same principles. Following in his footsteps, this article looks at the 1661, 1663 and 1664 campaign practices in Hungary and sets out to answer again whether there was a significant difference in principle between Zrinyis and Montecuccoli’s strategies. It also tries to describe the intellectual background, rooted in late antique - in this case Byzantine - military tracts and ideas, which unified the military strategy concepts of the era throughout Europe, thanks to the translation efforts of the humanists, irrespective of the divergence of individual opinions, be it the battlefields of the Low Countries, the Thirty Years’ War or the anti-Ottoman fights in Hungary during the 1660s. 216
