ZOLTÁN TÓTH MEDIEVAL ABASÁR The history of Abasár during the Árpád period of the Middle Ages is indeed significant, as not only did Sár belong to the Aba Clan, but the settlement was also one of the clan’s centres. There have been excavations in the centre of the settlement, on the hill known as Bolt-tető, and the north-western part of the village on the Peterma site, on and off since the 1950s. This paper offers a short summary of the history of Abasár during the Árpád period, based on the archaeological finds. The similarities that can be observed at the sites at Peterma and Bolt-tető mark them out from the cemeteries seen elsewhere in the Mátra region. On both sites one finds tombs among the graves, as well as trepanned skulls. Indeed, the settlement could have played an important role in the history of 11th century Hungary, particularly in the first half of the century. 27 I
