MIHÁLY GIBER - ORSOLYA HAVASY - GERGELY RÁKÓCZI EXPLORATORY EXCAVATIONS IN VÉGVÁRI VITÉZEK TÉR IN THE CENTRE OF EGER A summary of the results of the 2014 excavation in the light of two groups of finds. In 2014, on the site of the steps and ramp constructed in 2015 in the new square known as Végvári Vitézek tér in the centre of Eger, a full archaeological investigation took place, following a preliminary study and investigational dig. The results of the preliminary excavation made it clear that we were dealing with a site that was densely built, extremely so. The site, that had been nddled with disturbance caused by the laying of public utilities in recent decades, contained the remains of buildings dating from the 18th-19th centuries (mainly houses) and other constructions (e.g. drains, fences), as well as the remains of walls of recent origin on two of its sides. The walls of the houses, due to the demolition work that had taken place in the 20th century, only survived to the height of the one-time ground-level walking surface. Thus, a large part of the excavated area was made up of the walls and cellars of the large baroque house that once overlooked the stream. We were able to gain some important information about how the various levels related to one another. Another significant result came in the form of the relatively large quantities of material finds covering the period from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. Here we present the buildings we uncovered together with some of the coin and ceramic finds.
