ARCHAEOLOGY AND PRESERVATION AT THE CASTLE MUSEUM

OVER THE PAST 25 YEARS

The paper looks back to how resources were used in the field of archaeology at Eger Castle in the period before the political changes in 1989 (Dobó Bastion, Hippolit-kapu, northern wall), the lull that took place at the castle during the 1990s, and the investments that were made (the moving of finds to the store in Sas út, and the stores enlargement) on the back of the excavations being made prior to the construction of the M3 motorway. We look at the situation post-Károly Kozák, and the way the protection of ancient monuments evolved from the point of view of Eger Castle. We outline the way renovation was undertaken at the turn of the millennium, the research that was undertaken as result of the first Széchenyi Plan (the rotunda, the Romanesque cathedral, the western wall) from the point of view of the renovation work that was undertaken. We also look at the way the archaeological finds have been presented at the exhibition devoted to the history of the castle. Finally we reflect on the archaeological work currently going on in connection with the latest investments, and the plans for future renovation work.
