THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE EGER BORDER CASTLE CONFERENCES BETWEEN 1982 AND 2014

Agnes R. Várkonyi historian, university head of department, full member of the Hungarian Academy of Science and associate member of the British Royal Historical Society was a leading figure in the historical profession, particularly within the field of historical ecology whose introduction into Hungary she was responsible for. Her name is also associated with the border castle conference series in Eger which began in 1982, and has since become one of Hungary’s leading historical research workshops. It was for her research and her special relationship with the town of Eger that the trustees of the Order of the Dobó Sword presented Ágnes R. Várkonyi with the Dobó Sword in 2012.
