Lajos Négyesi RESEARCH INTO EARLY MODERN OTTOMAN BATTLEFIELDS IN HUNGARY The age of the Ottoman wars is a very important part of Hungarian early modem history. It consisted of many sieges and battles, the study of which is not only historical, but archaeological. Although the castle mins generally still remain, it is more difficult to identify the battlefields. It is only with the help of primary sources and the analysis of maps that the presumed location of the battle may be found. Often it is possible to identify any traces of field fortifications that survive, while metal-detector surveys also help in the evaluation of any possible battlefield sites. This procedure is followed by the identification of any Ottoman objects, although it is only very rarely that the mass graves of the fallen soldiers are found. Our paper therefore seeks to explain and present the characteristics the battlefield archaeology with respect to the Ottoman wars. 398
