Péter Balia GERGELY BORNEMISSZÁD SON JÁNOS AND HIS MILITARY AND POLITICAL CAREER János Bornemissza, the son of the defender of Eger Castle, continued in the footsteps of his father and became a soldier. János Bornemissza made the most of his abilities as a soldier in István Báthori’s military campaigns in Moscow in the 1580s, where he played a key role, and as one of the com­manders of the Hungarian army’s expeditionary force. Following the cam­paigns István Báthori rewarded his soldier with estates in Transylvania, where he soon found himself a member of the Transylvanian elite. Politically he supporting the cause of the “Turkish party” (which wanted the Princi­pality of Transylvania to remain uninvolved in the Fifteen Years War which was then on the point of breaking out), and it was for this reason that he was executed in 1594. 270
