OLÁH TAMÁS: Csicsva vára a Bocskai-felkeléstől a Thököly-felkelés végéig

Tamás Oláh CSICSVA CASTLE FROM THE BOCSKAI UPRISING TO THE END OF THE THÖKÖLY UPRISING It is possible to say that the history of Csicsva from the Bocskai Uprising to the close of the Thököly Uprising was rich and varied for a number of reasons. This was partly because the castle witnessed several changes in owner, with the castle that had once been in the hands of one single owner became the property of several part owners, all of whom played an important part in the life of Zemplén County. At the time of the Thököly Uprising the castle’s administrative importance grew just at the time when the Kuruc raids into the county were getting to the point of becoming a continual nuisance. At the same time it is interesting to note that the Kuruc siege of the castle in 1648 shows why the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries is considered a watershed in the history of the Hungarian castles. It was a time when the small medieval castles which were still capable of offering some defence against the raiding forces, now found themselves incapable of holding off a siege laid by artillery forces for any period of time. 216
