shows that those publications relating to Hungary aroused great interest in the book market of the Holy Roman Empire: the works of Miklós Istvánffy, Hieronymous Ortelius, Martin Zeiler, Edward Brown, Sigmund von Birken and Eberhard Happel were all to have a new lease of life. It is a rich and varied media that one finds recording people’s experiences of the change in military fortunes. Following the 1683 Turkish siege of Vienna a luxury edition series of cards was published featuring the key players in the defence of the city. From the cards one can sense how the defeat of the Turks marked a significant change in the balance of power in Europe. Such a change in outlook is also reflected in the Vienna-published “Ungarische und Wienerische Staats Registratur”, whose two hundred pages record the events of 1687 in the form of a diary. The “nótárius publicus” sees the changes in terms of the way in which the state was run. The ever-changing image of the Turks also played a determining role in the changing system of norms and attitudes which accompanied the change in historical era. 127
