Az egri vár kultusza

THE CULT OF EGER CASTLE The study outlines the process by which the Cult of Eger, with which we are so familiar today, came into being. The cult has played an important role in ensuring that the castle, and with it the István Dobó Castle Museum functioning within its walls, is the most visited historical site in Hungary. The cult of the castle is founded on the heroism of those two thousand soldiers who, during the autumn of 1552, under the leadership of castellan István Dobó, successfully repelled an Ottoman-Turkish army 80,000-strong. Eger was the first instance during the 16th century of a Hungarian castle being able to protect itself against the main forces of the Turks, and to halt the advance of the Turkish Empire towards Western Europe. Without the benefit of external help it was a victory that won the admiration of the Christian world. In the centuries that followed, historians, poets, writers, painters, sculptors and musicians all contributed to creating a castle cult based on the heroism of the defenders of the castle and the personality of István Dobó. The author goes through the writers and artists one by one and describes the István Dobó Castle Museum's role in maintaining and propagating the traditions in question. 152
