quently belonging to a member of the cabinet-maker’s family. From the beginning of the twentieth century furniture painting gradually declined in importance, becoming dated and old-fashioned. At the same time the activities of the cabinet-makers producing for the market, who now operated from furniture shops, were becoming ever more restricted. During the course of our research, however, we also came upon a number of villages where folk furniture-making traditions were being revived and cultivated. In Mezőkövesd there is a folk craftsmen who makes chairs, and the motifs found on Gömör incised chests are now been given new life in the making of folk toys. 187
