HISTORICAL TRUTHS ABOUT TAMÁS VARKOCS IN TINÓDPS BALLADS

2006 marked an important literary anniversary, for it was 450 years ago that the writer of historic ballads Sebestyén Tinódi Lantos died in Sárvár. The person of Tamás Varkocs, castellan of Eger Castle, and his activities, however, are less well known, and have unfairly been pushed into the background. In his contemporary Tinódi’s Chronicle, the castellan is mentioned on a number of occasions. This study focuses on three topics. The introduction is devoted to Tamás Varkocs’s career. We then turn to Varkocs’s years in Eger, as well as the military events which Tinódi describes in his historic ballad about Tamás Varkocs, albeit without any attention to chronological detail. Finally we look at Varkocs and Tinódi’s relationship.
