Gábor Veres THE FOSTERING OF MILITARY TRADITIONS AND TOURISM AT EGER CASTLE Those involved in the fostering of military traditions attempt to recreate the clothes and weapons of a chosen era in the most accurate way possible. Those consulting the Internet will find more than thirty Hungary battle reenactment societies whose aims, apart from the ones mentioned above, include among their most important activities reenactments of their chosen periods to a larger or a more restricted audience. Many of them also put on special extra-curricular history lessons. Teachers try to prepare for these special lessons as best they can with the materials they have available, in the hope of increasing their pupils’ interest in history. Apart from what they learn at school a large proportion of the public know nothing or very little about the periods the battle reenactment societies represent, which is in fact one of the reasons why the groups do what they do. So what exactly is the situation today? If we were to place ten battle reenactment societies from ten different periods next to one another, what percentage of the general public would at least be able to place them in the correct century? Over the last few years a number of sociological surveys have taken place at the István Dobó Castle Museum examining visitors’ habits and requirements, and it is these which provide us with the evidence for our chosen study. The study examines those events and programmes that are most significant from a battle reenactment point of view, as well as the teaching programmes which go on at the museum, focusing on the relationship that exists between the fostering of (military) traditions and tourism at the Eger Castle Museum. 180
