Függelék - Glass industry in Hungary until 1920

of the production was provided by Siemens furnaces and the fire-fired glass works lagging behind in competition closed down. As opposed to this, Hungary’s glass industry within the Habsburg Empire was beaten by the modem and cheaply operating factories of Austria and Bohemia. As a result of this, the country had an increasing demand for glass importation. After the first world war as a consequence of the Peace Treaty of Trianon, Hungary lost four fifth of its glass industry and it was almost completely destroyed as old Hungary was dismembered and annihilated by the victorious antant powers. In the territory of old Hungary successor countries were formed. The economic development of these countries distorted as a result of the fact that the thousand years’ economic and market relations had got demolished and new national economies were to be created instead. The results of this not only led to the marginal economic status of the region but the effects can even be felt in the beginning of the new millenium. The last chapter of the book is The database of the glass industrial establishments of the Hungarian Monarchy from the XII. Century to 1920. Besides being the survey of the glass industry of old Hungary, it can also be the basis for further researches as the geographical location of the glass making establishments found in different sources and historic works are clarified topographically. The technical terms are printed in italics in each case and are found in the section The explanation for technical terms. The names of the settlements separated from the country after the Peace of Trianon in 1920 are found in the List for beyond-border place names. The name of each person mentioned in the book proprietors, owners, merchants is found in the name index. The verification of the academic authenticity of this piece of work is ensured by the Abbreviations and the detailed Bibliography. The foreign readers may leam about the content of the book on the basis of the English and German summaries. The rich illustration material (drawings, maps, engravings and photographs) is thematically linked to the individual chapters. My intention was to create a book of culture historical character analyzing the branch of industry from several aspects. May the dear reader decide whether I have achieved my goal. 373
