Eger, like most of the other border castles, was not only a military installa­tion, but a bastion of Christian culture participating in the fight to curb the spread of Islam. The chain of border castles made it possible for aristocratic courtly culture in that part of Hungary still under royal control to develop relatively undisturbed. In defending the hinterland, the border castles were therefore able, both directly and indirectly, to contribute to the Carpathian Basin’s continued participation in Europe’s cultural development. 197
