Etényi: News and Data Referring to Military Provisions in Hungary in ló™ and 17r^ Century Broadsides. From the leaflets, posters and the printed newsletters covered in this study it is possible to see how the recording of the numbers of enlisted soldiers, the state of the provisions, and the economic state of ló1*1 and 17^ century armies become more pertinent and more accurate. It became more important for authorities to make decisions, whether that be going to war or signing a peace accord, with the necessary information, both clearly and accurately expressed, to hand. Apart from looking at the changes in attitudes towards economic matters, one also needs to take into consideration powers’ growing interest in making information public, and in the additional demands that making such information public prompted. The official reports, whose figures had an air of finality about them, were a manifestation of the workings of a professional apparatus providing propaganda of sorts to a well- oiled state machine. On the other hand, the publications reflect the needs of the recipients, who were able to accurate and concrete accounts of everyday events, wars both at home and abroad, and peace agreements at an ever-increasing rate. „Ha csak egy alkalommal is a Német-római Birodalom minden egyes városa, települése, kolostora, zárdája, rendháza csak nyolc pfenyt fizetne, máris sikerülne megteremteni egy törököt kiűző nagyszabású hadjárat pénzügyi alapját. Hiszen már ebből a kis hozzájárulásból is 250 000 gulden gyűlne ösz- sze. Sőt, ha a templomok, kolostorok és rendházak nagyobb összeget fizetnének, még több pénzt is elő lehetne teremteni. Ha pedig a sok világi hívságról is lemondanának az emberek, a felesleges arany és ezüstneműket, drága ruhákat pénzzé tennék, akkor könnyűszerrel elő lehet teremteni egy támadó háború költségeit. 100 tonna aranyból rengeteg ágyút és a hozzá szükséges ágyúgolyót, kézi lőfegyvereket lehetne készíttetni, sőt egy 100 000-es sereget * Németországi kutatásaimat Wolfenbüttelben, a Herzog August Bibliothek (HAB), Brémában a Pro Renovanda Culturae, Nümbergben az Eötvös Ösztöndíj segítségével végeztem.
