Orczy Mansion of Gyöngyös
ashes and pines, or wander among rosebushes. Now the legendary Turkish hazel near the eastern main entrance of the garden is under protection, and some old yews still delight the heart of the visitors. Due to the reconstruction at the beginning of the 19 lh century, on the southern side of the area two huge gates were put, with a lion-statue on each pillar. The statues were made by Ferenc Uhrl from Budapest. The eastern gate was more frequently used than the other one since this one led to the new main entrance of the mansion. The impressing classicist facade and the gates with the lions were accompanied by follies that made the sight of the area complete. Follies were popular architectural elements of English gardens. They could serve as look-out towers, but they also functioned as cool and pleasant places for rest. We hope that the mansion and the garden around it will regain its original beauty thanks to reconstruction of the very near future. The visitors will be able to enjoy spreading trees, a pond and exhibition rooms of natural history in the renewed English garden, while in the mansion itself Baroque details and Baroque frescos will delight them.
