The paper gives an overview of the events and data of the life of the noted priest-poet, Antal Pájer (Maklár, 20 May, 1814 - Jászapáti, 4 June, 1881). Situating Pájer in the intellectual life of the 19th-century Eger, and stressing his links with Gyöngyös, the examination shows that he held the same role in the history of religious poetry that Petőfi had in the secular sphere: his expression was enriched by a rural motif pool and images of everyday life, the real world. He did more for a renewal of Hungarian poetry inspired by Catholic thought by his elaboration of an experience of God which was more personal and intimate than anything before that, closely linked to the Hungarian realities and national traditions. Béla Tarkányi and Gedeon Mindszenty followed in his footsteps. His initiative and results lived on in the 20th century revolution and development of Hungarian religious poetry (as in the work of Lajos Harsányi, Sándor Sík, and László Mécs). 1 Bemutatott néhány olyan alkotót, akiknek a szellemi örökségét mindkét település magáénak tekintheti. Föltűnt a listán Pájer Antal neve is, akinek a gyöngyösi kötődéseit korábban homály fedte. Számos tény igazolja ezeket a kötődéseket: részben itt, a híres ferences gimnáziumban végezte középfokú tanulmányait; megénekelte az 184l-es gyöngyösi szüretet; bensőséges hangvételű verset írt Vachott Sándorhoz; legszűkebb baráti köréhez sorolhatta Zalár Józsefet és Sárosi Gyulát, akiknek az l'ÄJKK AST At 1 „É te is üdvözlégy, testvérváros...!"
