2000 MÁTRAI TANULMÁNYOK GYÖNGYÖS p. 205-221 Dr. Puky Árpád polgármester munkássága Horváth László ABSTRACT: The Work of Mayor Dr. Árpád Puky Dr Árpád Puky was the successful and popular mayor of Gyöngyös from 1919 to 1942, for 23 years. It was during his time that the town was rebuilt from her ruins after the great fire of 1917, the revolutionary period following World War I, and the Roumanian military occupation. Most of our public institutions are still in the form he had dreamt and planned them; the town center and the network of streets were also the results of his activity as a mayor. It was his great plan and dream to organize Gyöngyös and the Mátra into a holiday resort known and respected nation-wide. This earned the town not only fame but also a significant new source of income, since after Trianon the previously used holiday resorts fell outside the boundaries. The improvement of the Mátra into holiday, spa, and winter sport center is arguably to be attributed to the initiative and leading activity of Dr. Árpád Puky. He was not a member of any party; in fact, he stood above party politics. Not being friendly to the German, he was sent into retirement by the body of representatives on 9 February, 1942-after more than 20 years of successful and impressive activity as a mayor. After the war he became the president of the local National Committee, supported by the approval of the whole town. This time he was not friendly enough to the Soviet Government; the Communists first deprived him of his status, and in 1952 they refused to pay his pension. He died in the summer of 1959, at the age of 82, in poverty and loneliness. He is buried in the Uppertown Cemetery. 1959-ben, azaz több mint 40 éve hunyt el Gyöngyös város történetének legsikeresebb és legmaradandóbb emléket maga után hagyó polgármestere, bizáki dr. Puky Árpád. A kerek évforduló sokadik alkalmat nyújtja számomra, hogy emlékeztessem és felhívjam a várost, a régiót, sajnos még most is élő tartozására. Nem becsüljük, nem értékeljük eléggé a jelentős gyöngyösi személyiségeink emlékét. Dr. Puky Árpádnak már nincs szüksége emléktáblára, utcanévre, kopjafára, külsőségre. Nekünk magunknak kellene, hogy legyen igényünk, odafigyelésünk és szándékunk erre ! 1989-ig azt hihettem, hogy az addigi politika berendezkedés parancsolt csak hallgatást és feledést. Szándékos volt a részemről, hogy az újrainduló Gyöngyösi Kalendárium sorozatban 1990-ben épp az Ó munkásságát, emlékét mutassam be a mátraaljai olvasóknak. Sajnos az akkor blikkfangosnak szánt nyitósoraim mind a mai napig, most is érvényesek: „Valakit elfelejtettünk. Valaki régen elment, és itt hagyta munkája gyümölcsét, Gyöngyös várost. Volt idő, amikor utca viselte nevét (a mai Mátrai út), s volt idő, amikor nevét is elkerültük... "
