Dr. Fűköh Levente szerk.: Malakológiai Tájékoztató 15. (Eger, 1986.)

DOMOKOS, T.: In memoriam KOVÁCS GYULA (1932-1996)

In 1969 he gets married to Margit Ribai, pharmacologist. 1970 his son Attila is born, in whom the pedagoge Gyula Kovács lives on. Naturally he does not stop scientific work after getting his doctor-title. Until his death according to today information - he published 38 papers in the field of malacology. Between 1975 and 1980 he was most productive, as he published 13 papers. Almost half of his publications were partner-publications which shows us, that collecting and exchange was most important for him. He did not want to "spoil" time by writing, and only becuase of his partners pressing him he published, together with his partners. In most cases he did the classifications. His outstanding knowledge of scientific history and faunistics died with him. In spite of my repeated request he did not give away his knowledge of differing species only he knew to the readers of differing specieks only he knew to the readers of "Soosiana" and the "Malacological Informative", those he used for classification work, and using of which fast and very exact classification was made possible for him with only minimal local morphological marking. With 200-250 exchanges he built up a collection of about 17,000 pieces of molluscs, which is outstanding in the country. Among his home and foreign exchange partners names appear as M. Bodon; K.J. Boss; A. Grossu; W. Klemm; J.G.J. Kuiper; W. Maassen; H. Nordsieck; O. Paget; L. Pintér; A. Riedel and A. Varga. In 1972 A. Varga names a new species after him, considering science, under the name of Pintér L. Hygromia kovácsi. This mentiones species was found by him in the Eastern woods of the county. Since 1972 he took part in the publishing work of "Soosiana", publishing the work and the results of Hungarian Malacologists for foreign experts. Durint the almost 41 years of scientific work he made the name of the town of Békéscsaba known among the zoologists home and abroad. Between 1979 and 1981 he worked as part-time museologist at Mihály Munkácsy Museum in Békéscsaba. Taking the way of his teacher Dr. Andor Horváth, he grew to become - maybe - the last carismatic malacologist. Learning from the mistakes in one-copy collection he prefers collecting in masses. His hand-writing was surprisingly calligraphic, and his outstanding personality always resulted good mood and humor in his surrounding. It also was great enjoyment to hear him singing songs accompanying himself on the piano. His optimism was individual, outstanding, too. He deeply kept his illness secret to spare his family, his surrounding. It is strange, however, but he seemed to find time for everything. Even among ectreme political streamings he kept his optinion, sticked to his theorem. It should be these last mentioned characteristics of his we should make our own to be able to sail our life into safe harbour amidst the steadily chnaning values of our days, to reach that very place peacefully where Dr. Gyula Kovács arrived to on the 22nd of July, 1996.
