32 PÁL SÜMEGI PRE-NEOLITIZATION - THE ENVIRONMENTAL HISTORICAL RECONSTRUCTION OF A CHANGE IN LIFESTYLE OCCURRING DURING THE LATE MESOLITICUM IN THE CARPATHIAN BASIN According to the Holocene sections dated with various radiocarbon data, there were several minor changes initiated by man in the flora between 6000-7000 CAL BC. These changes appear to be related to the more intense foraging for peanuts, to the use of saplings of young linden and ash-trees for fodder, perhaps to hunting paths and campsites, in sum, to a more permanent settlement. They also display some correlation with the early acquisition or imitation of the individual elements of a productive kind of economy, and/or with the internal development of the Mesolithic communities, which has already been proved in archeology. Natural scientific data seem to authenticate the earlier assumption of archeologists concerning the development and establishment of a self-sustained PreNeolithic phase in the Carpathian Basin during the 7 l millennium BC, right before the advent of early Neolithic cultures. It also seems to have been the case that this Pre-Neolithic phase survived in the foreground of the Carpathian Mountains during the course of the settlement of the Körös culture.
