KATALIN T. BÍRÓ-JUDIT REGÉNYE FLINTSTONE QUARRY AND PROCESSING SITES RESEARCH STUDY OF A GROUP OF SITES FROM THE NEOLITHIC AROUND SZENTGÁL (VESZPRÉM COUNTY) The most expansive flintstone quarry in Hungary is located in the vicinity of Szentgál. Research work on the site was started in 1983. Processed forms of the flintstone stock from the quarry has been discovered to appear with fairly high frequency at sites dating back to the Neolithic. In addition, a conspicuous settlement pattern can also be observed in the area around the quarry. For the purposes of mining and protecting the quarry, a „ring" of eight settlements surrounds the hill called Tűzköveshegy in a formerly uninhabited zone. These are: Szentgál-Füzi-kút, SzentgálTeleki-dülö, Szentgál-Tobán, Ajka-Pál major, Ajka-Feketehegy, Bánd, Herend-Csapberek, and Városlőd-Uj major. While the processing of the stone stock was apparently a significant factor in the life of the settlements, the role of the traditional Neolithic activities appears to have remained dominant. The relative density of the settlements in the formerly uninhabited area is assumed to have served the interests of intensified protection and, at the same time, those of a more intensive mining activity. The excavation sites are located at a stretch of 4-8 kilometers from one another, while their distance from the source of raw material is only 3-9 kilometers. The surface finds seem to suggest that they were established at exactly the same time. Apart from uncovering of the quarry, we have executed probing excavations at the settlements since 1986. T.
