Ákos Janó: The wind blows from Hortobágy Puszta
Hortobágy. These two faraway lands had numerous similarities in their farming and shepherding traditions, in which phenomenon one can discover the effect of the „wind blowing from Hortobágy". The author presents the customs, rules and unwritten laws of the pastoral life in the literary vein. There's a separate chapter devoted to the healing and demolishing skills of the shepherds that also discusses their vast knowledge of nature and superstitious beliefs. Typical characters of the puszta were the outlaws (betyárok) who found ideal hiding places in the wild grasslands and occasionaly had relationship with sheperds that bordered on the criminal. In the folklore of Kiskunság there are several stories about the different deeds of the outlaws that live to this day in the form of songs, ballads or tales. 4 186 *
