POPULAR CERAMICS 134 In the middle of the 19th century, etching also appears on the surface of green glazed vessels. On the basis of the material familiar to us at present, the red-brown glazed vessels seem to belong to the latest group. It is in this group that the highest number of large-sized vessels survived, of which all are masterpieces of the trade without exception. This is confirmed by signet F.C. stamped on the vessels under the handles. The objects coming from earlier times are jugs with long pouring spouts, whereas among later examples we can also find a pot. Beside the familiar decorations, there appeared a newer motif, i.e. the bunch of grapes. This can be observed mainly on the early objects. Among the vessels on display in the middle gallery, the earliest exhibit is from 1826. The vessels that come from the second half of the century also demonstrate the characteristics mentioned above. The vessels that belong to the fourth style were decorated with painting. The so-called figurái vessels are in a separate display case. Beside the honey jars and tobacco boxes of the shape of bears and lambs, which are well-known all over the country, the hussarshaped pitchers with a narrow neck and the socalled Jutka"-jugs with their salient and easyto-recognize form are the best examples of the figurái ceramics in Debrecen. The tools used for making shell-shaped pasta in the second display case represent a separate group among the products of Debrecen pottery. The wooden pieces were known and used all over the country, but it was only in Debrecen that they were made of shard, mostly from around the middle and the end of the 19th century. The majority of them were just trinkets, with their surface glazed usually with green glazing and the name of the person who made or owned them was often written on the back.
