Sz. Kürti Katalin: Vezető a Déri Múzeum kiállításaihoz I. Régi képtár és Új magyar képtár (Debrecen, 1978)
The Old and the New Picture Gallery of the Déri Museum The Reformed College of Debrecen started to collect paintings and sculptures as early as the middle of the 18th century. The Portrait Gallery contains the portraits of benefactors, donators, patrons, great professors and church dignitaries. These works can be seen in the Museum and Library of the College. The Municipal Museum was founded relatively later, in 1902., and has received visitors since 1905. The Municipal Gallery was established in 1918 based on deposit material from the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts. A few years later Mr Frigyes Déri (1852-1924), a Hungarian silk factory owner, who lived in Vienna, offered his large collection of cultural history to the city of Debrecen. The building of the Déri Museum, designed by architects Dénes Györgyi and Aladár Münnich, was built after Deri's death (1924), in the years 1926-28. The second floor of the building houses the Déri Gallery, which contains firstclass works of art. It is justified that Deri's marble bust, work by Alajos Stróbl, stands next to the upstairs entrance, and his portrait, painted by József Koppay hangs in the vestibule of the exhibition located on the second floor. The Old Gallery contains 17th-19th paintings, supplemented by sculptures, coins and graphics. In the first cabinet one can see General on Horseback, work of an unknown Flemish master, and Portrait of a Child (Crown Prince Joseph?) by a Spanish painter, the portrait of Pál Esterházy (1635-1713), work of an unknown Hungarian or Austrian painter. This latter painting shows similarity to the full-length portrait on display in Esterházy Castle in Kismarton, which was painted in 1655 by Benjamin Block. The oval half-length portrait depicts the young Count, patron of arts, the later Palatine and Duke, nearly at the same age. The Portrait of a Polish Man, painted with great psychological insight, is not signed, however, it is considered to be the work of Adam Mányoki (1673-1757). His contemporary fellow-artist, the Chech Jan Kupetzky (1667-1740), is represented in the Museum by four paintings: a self-portrait, portrait of Mányoki, and the portrait of a Kurutz General and Portrait of an Architect. Frigyes Déri had a rich collection of Austrian painters (Hans Temple, Karl Merode, Hans Makart, Karl Wilda), however, on the walls of the Gallery we can see only a Still Life (1828) with fruits and parrot by Ferdinand Waldmüller (1793-1865).
