Debrecen Béla Surányi Ferenc Pohl and the horticulture of Debrecen Horticulture as a branch of cultivation is an important part of agricultural production. Its concept and role have changed throughout history and over time it became the main method for producing certain species. Although Debrecen's past has a rich tradition of horticulture, these traditions never surpassed the average level, even though landscaping and the breeding of plant species by farmers had been present in the horticulture of both the town and its environs. Debrecen drew its economic strength from animal husbandry and the wine trade, and then later from arable farming. The modernisation of domestic agriculture only reached the horticulture of Debrecen at the beginning of the 20th century, and a major role was played in this by the activity of Ferenc Pohl, who directed this sector from the early 1920s until 1949. In our work, we endeavour to present the most important phases of this development in respect to the history of agricultural production, especially because horticulture is a benchmark for the standard of agricultural culture in a given area; not to mention that it impacts the guality of life of the urban population.
