84 OROSZ ISTVÁN the beginning ofthei8th century. By that time, no crop rotation methods were in use in other parts of the country. Due to the pressure either by the government or the lord of the manor, a number of settlements acguired the three-crop rotation system. Some, however, - especially those of the newly established agricultural towns - applied the fallow system (enclosure farming). In the 19th century, some of these settlements changed from this directly to the modern agricultural farming methods. These settelements enjoyed a great advantage: the common lands needed no redistribution, especially if the farm (hamlet) system was a direct conseguence of the fallow system. The scattered nature of strip farming was avoided by those who followed the enclosure method.
