József Dénes Kovács Japanese collection of the Déri Museum I.

Frigyes Déri's collection

Frigyes Déri for several decades tried collecting valuable and distinctive works of art acquired from many locations around the world. Especially distinctive are the objects from Japan, which were mostly made in the Edo era. This period was a golden age of Japanese arts and crafts so artefacts of the Japanese-collection are outsanding both in artistic standards and quality. From an historical perspective, the Diary of purchases kept by Déri is an exceptionally important document, as it has all the significant information of purchases of artworks between 1912 and 1920. When examining the Japanese-collection the Catalogue is also of great help as it does not only categorise the items given to the museum, but also gives detailed description ofthem.

It is interesting to compare the two documents in terms of the amount ofoverlapping items in the two documents. The Diary of purchases lists 113 Japanese artifacts, while the Catalogue names 108 ofthem. The available data suggest a high probability of 40 Japanese subjects that can be identified which includes data from both sources.

According to our plans this exceptional art collection will feature at our Asia-Pacific exhibition as a single unit, thus commemorating the collector and founder of our museum, Frigyes Déri.
