Budapest József Dénes Kovács Auxiliary soldiers' religious beliefs in the province of Pannónia in the 1st - 3rd centuries Research on the history of the auxiliary armed forces of the imperal age is greatly helped by the epigraphs the units left behind. In most cases they reveal where the inscriber came from, to what extend he clung to the gods of his homeland or converted to the worship of Roman gods. There were a large number of auxiliary troops stationed in Pannónia in the 2nd- 3rd centuries. The analysis of their religious epigraphs shows that the cohorts were composed of several nationalities. Whereas part of them assimilated, others, like Syrian soldiers, preserved their ancestors' culture and faith. The targets of worship were not only war-gods but also some more peaceful ones (such as Silvanus and Liber), for whom altars were often set up by veterans. All this leads to the conclusion that, after being discharged, a lot of soldiers chose to settle down in Pannónia rather than move back home, making the already varied ethnic makeup of the area even more colourful.
