János Dani The social aspects of the Middle Bronze Age tell-settlements of the Berettyó Valley The MBA fortified tells of the Berettyó Valley are well-known since the end of the 19th century. Some were excavated in the years of 1920's by L. Zoltai and J. Sőregi and later, between 1970-80 by Sz.Máthé M. In the last common study with Mrs. K. P. Fischl we tried to summerize all of the information about these tells, their outer settlements, but usually the small sattelite settlements are missing. At the same time we have studied the settlement structure and the settlement hierarchy from geographical aspect, during the flourishing MBA of this region. Now I try to examine the fortified tells from social viewpoint. In the case of micro-region 'Polgár-lsland' there was created a modell on the phenomenon observed on the basis of newly excavated cemeteries:

,tells as the centres of the Elite, the social power and wealth'. Reconsidering some old and considering some new uniqe finds (weapons, gold jewellery, phenomenon and finds connecting to the religious beliefs/sacrificial activity) from the tells of the Berettyó Valley, I attempt to outline the role and significance of these MBA tells, I try to demonstrate the presence of the wealthy Elite with real power and in this connection the developed social hierarchy of the society of these sites.
