Zoltán Boldog A TURKISH CHANFRON FROM THE DÉRKOLLECTION Armoured war horses in antiquity and the Muslim world Besides the collection of weapons the Déri Museum hosts a small but varied harness collection, which also owes its existence to Frigyes Deri's careful work as an art collector. One of the pieces of the harness collection is a Turkish chanfron (headpiece of horse armour) (D.F. 16/158), which may have been part of a more complete Oriental mail barding. Any piece of horse armour from any period is a rarity in Hungarian collections. Since this is an exceptionally rare type of defensive arms, before describing the Turkish chanfron from Debrecen, I give an outline of the use of armoured war horses in the Muslim armies of the Middle East as well as its ancient antecedents in the region.
