Finds from the simple graves allowed the reconstruction of certain elements of male and female costume (sleeves were embroidered with beads, simple purses containing flints and strike-alights, knives suspended from belts). The animal bones and vessels indicate that food was placed in the graves for the long journey to the afterworld. Observations made in one grave suggest that the grave pit was smoked prior to the burial in order to cleanse the pit of evil spirits. An 80 cm long iron sword with remains of the wooden sheath was found in Grave 2 beside the leg bones. This weapon is a typical Barbarian weapon used in the 3rd-4th centuries. Four coins were recovered from the graves: a denarius of Nero (64-68), Faustina Junior (147176), Crispina (180-183) and an unidentifiable coin from the 2nd century. These coins date the excavated cemetery section to the later 2nd century, a date that is not contradicted by the grave goods (fibulae, vessels). Only the sword can be dated to a slightly later period. The cemetery section can thus be assigned to the late 2nd-early 3rd century. The twenty-one graves were part of a larger cemetery. Magnetometer surveys conducted on another hill lying a few hundred meters to the east suggested the presence of some two dozen graves from another cemetery containing burial mounds encircled with ditches. 187
