Tanulmányok - Siroki Zoltán: Some data to the Saltatoria fauna of Hungary

Zoltán Siroky Some data to the Saltatoria fauna of Hungary Author wishes to contribute to the rather poor Orthoptera collected in four years (19591962). The material collected includes 71 species and 1480 specimens. For the best part it has been collected around Debrecen and on the Hortobágy. He was gathering also in the Buda Hills, at Bátorliget, Csaroda, in the Bükk Mountains and in the Sátor Mountains. At Csaroda he could visit the bog-moss turbary but on one occasion, at a time when it was possible to gather Orthoptera already. It was then that he succeeded in getting hold of a young specimen of the Odontopisma Schmidth; a species that had been collected by B. Nagy also at Bátorliget. Csaroda is a most promising spot that would deserve to be thoroughly explored not only by botanists but also by entomologists. Wherever possible, author indicates the environment plant as well where the species concerned was found. A pasture on the sandy Sámson Hills along the highroad Debrecen-Hajdúsámson, at a distance of 8 miles from the former has proved a most interesting place. Several species, whose occurence in other places is but sporadic, can be gathered there in masses. Such species are: the Calliptamus barbarus barbarus, Oedaleus decorus, Celes variabilis, Sphingonotus coerulans, Acrotylus longipes. A single specimen of Dociostaurus maroccanous counted among rarities today has also been found. The Acrotylus longipes has been discovered in Hungary by Dr. Barnabás NAGY at Ágasháza and in Debrecen. Its habitat coincides with that of the Sphingonotus coerulans. It shows a preference for the driest moulds of the pasture, where short, young Eleagnus shrubs have been planted. Unfortunately the survival of this rare species does not seem guarantees around Debrecen as the Sámson Hills are used as drill grounds. The best part of the material was collected on August 6th 1955. Although the species are excellent fliers it is not difficult to catch then, most of them were cought by hand. In their company not only Sphingonotus caerulans but also Acrolytus insubricus were present. Sámson Hills are remarkable for other reasons too. In spring the Cincindella soluta, later the Scarabeus affinis can be gathered there in great numbers. There are also many Lacerta taurica there, too. It would be worth the trouble to arrange regular entomological collections there and to look for similar areas in other parts of the Nyírség as well. The Stauroderus scalaris to be found in meadows of the Bükk Mountains at a height of 2700 feet on Mount Háromkő is a species seldom met with. It is easy to find as it clatters like the Psophus stridulus. Eight specimens of Sagapedo one of the most scare Orthotera in Hungary, were found also in the Bükk Mountains, on top of Mount Gerennavár (2200 feet). 402
