Tanulmányok - Salánki József: Wanderings of a Rare Book

1. A defective copy separated from the first part of a first or second edition. But even so, being a complete copy with title-page of Amerigo Vespucci's Quatuor Navigationes, it is a firstclass bibliographical rarity; or 2. A reprint of the first or second edition, prepared hurriedly to meet great demand. In this case it is a unique copy unknown so far. The booklet was purchased in Berne, in 1734, by György Maróthi, a renowned professor at the Reformed College of Debrecen, during his travel abroad (from 1731 to 1738) as a student. This appears from the following : 1. the note on the title-page "Georgius Marothi, 1734", and 2. the note on the cover page of composite volume F 807 g that reads as follows : "Georgius Marothi haec coUegit et in hoc volumen compingi fecit Bernae a.d. XI. Kal. Sept. CDDCCXXXV (György Marothi collected these and had them bound into this volume in Berne, on August 22, 1735.) After Marothi's death his library was bought by the Reformed College of Debrecen. It was in this way that his books, including our rarity, were included in the material of the College Library. 201
