N. Mészáros Júlia: A Győri Művésztelep működésének és alkotótevékenységének 35 éve

I 1991, and to subordinate the selection of the artists to the objectives of development of the symposium’s collection, according to viewpoints of the museum and history of art, which was realized only later. Life livened up at the artists’ symposium again, which was open to all artists creating in an up-to-date spirit and on a good level, and to any contemporary tendency. A number of new professional programmes strengthened the symposium character, so getting acquainted with the city thoroughly, visit to contemporary Hungarian exhibitions of fine art and operating graphic workshops in the framework of excursions to Budapest and Szentendre, invitation of outside lecturers dealing with contemporary art, introduction of Győr artists, visit to their studios as well as private collections of contemporary art. Despite the high-standard professional work in excellent creative atmosphere, the great interest of the local audience, the considerable enrichment of the collection and the maximal satisfaction of participating artists, the leadership was unexpectedly replaced the following year, the organization of the artists’ symposium was entrusted to adult educators of the Sándor Petőfi Municipal Community Centre under the direct leadership of the Cultural Office of the newly set up local government. Naturally, István Ezsiás working here and considered a founding member of the international artists’ symposium became the artistic director of the artists’ symposium. The thought of institutionalization of the artists’ symposium was in the background of the rash decision. At this time there was no independent public collection in Győr, so the part of the collection of the artists’ symposium taken in the inventory of the main collection remained at the János Xantus Museum and the newest works was included in the collection of the Sándor Petőfi Community Centre. Later the community centre handed over the latter to the Municipal Museum, but even so a loss emerged because the well processed databank was transferred from the János Xántus Museum, and when the new museum received it back some years later, the documents of the years between 1993 and 1998 were completely missing. The majority of the works born between 1991 and 1993 - owing to the greater participation and intensive interest of foreign artists in the city - are strongly attached to Győr’s built cultural heritage and present, the „genus loci” often missed earlier. The intellectual openness experienced here, the atmosphere of the streets of the inner city resembling that in the West, the beauty and good state of the monuments, at the same time the constant presence of the shadow of the recent past, which still remained everywhere but mainly in the human mentality, and a strange, both animating and depressing mixture of all these influenced their work with an overwhelming force, captivating the Hungarian artists likewise. 82
