N. Mészáros Júlia: A Győri Művésztelep működésének és alkotótevékenységének 35 éve

All these were connected with the inner rythm of industrial production, the difficulties in organization of production, the considerable price increase of the imported basic materials because of the high inflation and the insufficiency of municipal financing. After at factories orders from above by telephone were not enough for smooth operation any more, the recurrent mistakes could have been avoided by appointing Csaba Illés as artistic director, i. e. greater professional competence and organization with knowledge of conditions of quality creative work, perliminary purchasing, financing of prime cost of industrial technology, winning over of further financial supporters. It did not happen like this and the artists’ symposium lost its attraction. (8) When Csaba Illés at long last became the artistic director of the symposium with full sphere of authority he could only take over piles of problems to solve. The presence of foreign artists drew the attention to the insufficiency of qualitative criteria of board and lodging. The low budget, loss of infrastructure, worn-out, disillusioning milieu, mounting of closing exhibitions of the artists’ symposium in an ad hoc way, through lack of a room, in a yard, without installation, the lack of catalogues, imperfection of documentation, contingency and isolation of the museum’s collection from public nursed all the thought of radical renewal of the artists’ symposium formulated by Csaba Illés both earlier and right then, but - despite of the maintainer’s good intention - did not find powerful support. The necessity of „we shall try and manage somehow” also superseded the artists’ preliminary planning as they only managed to realize a fraction of what they had conceived at home, and their activity could even jointly not realize either the aims set at the beginning of the second period or the expectations following the modification of profile. Hedvig Dvorszky, requested to publish in the catalogue on the occasion of the 20-year jubilee, after her study of critical tone, summarizing the operation of the Artists’ Symposium of Győr until then had been refused, expressed her final conclusion about the agonizing industrial sculptural symposium in her metaphorical writing „Glance to the Future”, quoting Richard Neutra: -„But if we cannot design spaces of also biologically perfect value by technological means, ones depending on complicated technology must not be created. ” Tibor Budahelyi’s 1991 performance „I’m Laid Out Here” at the RÁBA Works as a memento mori of the symposium of metal sculpture of Győr based on industrial technology closed the second period for good and all. In summer of 1989, the 1st Meeting of Artists’ Symposia in Hungary was organized in Győr where the inner problems became public, and Csaba Illés urged a radical and quick change, specifying the mistakes to be remedied immediately. The solution was brought about in 1991 by the new leadership, which was, however, commissioned only for three years by the municipality to revitalize the symposium (during the activity of Imre Olaszi, the head of the educational, cultural and sports department of the municipality) but it 80
