Mészáros welcomed the guests, then spoke briefly about the fact that the objective of the present conference was, besides the commemoration of the 35-year-old Artists’ Symposium of Győr and the Hungarian movement of symposia, common thinking of the establishment of still closer links of Hungarian artists’ symposia with education of art as well as the survey of resources necessary for the operation of the artists’ symposia and of the common tasks necessary for the transformation of the movement of symposia appropriate to our age, with especial regard to the National Sculptural Symposium to be held at the Exhibition Hall in Budapest the following week and the International Sculptural Symposium of Győr planned for next year. This organization made numerous positive decisions until it was closed down. Although the Society of Symposia was only established in 1990, the movement of symposia had basically begun before the operation of the Society, in the 60s. It is extremely interesting how its members were able to co-operate, living all over the country and everybody doing something different from their artistic 316
