JÁNOS RiMAY’S LETTER TO DEMETER NAPRÁGHY

The familial letter written in 1603 to Demeter Naprághy by János Rimay is one of the most important documents testifying the latter's inter-confessional attitude and his philosophical erudition. The starting point of the letter is the “life-similarity” between the writer and the addressee: Naprághy had been ousted from his diocese for more than two years, while Rimay's life had been embittered by his conflict with his uncle Péter Madách concerning his heritage. The present paper focuses on the sources of citations mentioned in the letter offering the remedy of philosophy and those of a Latin verse that seems to be Rimay's own poem.
