As a result of Ferenc Jeney’s study the historical memory has preserved a picture of Demeter Naprághy bishop of Győr as the last humanist high-priest. This little study modifies this picture by focusing on his relationship with the only free royal city of his diocese: Sopron, which was mainly under the rule of its Lutheran citizenry. This complex relationship also had a humanist line, since a devout promoter and local leader of the Lutheran belief, Major Kristóf Lackner, dedicated one of his works to Bishop Naprághy. A second line of this relationship can be characterised by the tendency of which the bishop attributed the proprietorship and use of the revenues of the beneficium ecclesiae to the benefit of the catholic inhabitants of the city of Sopron, which practice went back to the late medieval ages.
