Demeter Naprághy’s activity as bishop of Győr (1607-1619) The aim of this paper is to introduce Demeter Naprághy's period of life that he spent as Bishop of Győr and the main results of his activity. The first two decades of the 17th century brought a difficult period to the Hungarian Catholic Church. The Hungarian bishops had to find their way between the forces of the Habsburg Ruler and the feudal orders of the Habsburg provinces. The first part of the study tries to place Naprághy’s political activity into this field of forces, who built good relations with both the Ruler and the leaders of the Hungarian feudal orders. His political activity had a strong impact also on his ecclesiastic work which is the main focus in the second part of this paper. This part focuses on the following main issues: the episcopal estates and the episcopal revenues; the episcopal residences and Naprághy’s place of living in the diocese; the relationship between the bishop and the captain-general of Győr; the operation of the two Chapters active in the Diocese; the introduction of the Chapter of Győr and the Chapter of Vasvár including their staff; the situation of the monastic orders (the re-establishment of the Franciscan Order of Győr); the ecclesiastical body of the diocese and the moves taken for reforming this body (a summary of the data having been taken during his personal visitations in 1615). The final part summarises the information concerning the death and the heritage of the bishop. István Fazekas
