ARRABONA 2015-2018. 53-56._____________________________________________TANULMÁNYOK Thy CEMETERIES of Győrsziget The two cemeteries of the once independent settlement of Sziget belong to the old graveyards of Győr. In addition to the tombs of the 19th century of the Nádorváros cemetery - which were moved there from the Belváros (Downtown) cemetery - the tombs of the Sziget cemetery belong to the oldest outdoor tombs of the town. The owner of the Christian cemetery is still the Roman Catholic Church of Sziget that means it has not been appropriated by the city (like the cemetery of Révfalu). This cemetery preserved some important 19th century tombs. The Jew might have settled in Sziget at the end of the 18th century and their cemetery was also created at that time. Following the attachment of Sziget to Győr it became the central burial site of the Jew community living in Győr, although in contrast to the popular belief it is not the only Jewish cemetery in the town. The most important 19th century intact cemetery section is to be found in its area, where a number of locally important people rest. Here stands one of the most beautiful cemetery memorials in Hungary commemorating the victims of the Holocaust. There are also some First World War hero’s tombs the description of which is also topical due to the First World War centenary. Vilmos Tóth 284
