ARRABONA 2014. 52 FLÓRIS RÖMER, THE STATE PRISONER PART 1 TANULMÁNYOK Based on partly Rómer’s letters from the captivity and partly the published and unpublished memoires of Rómer’s fellow-prisoners, this study describes Flóris Rómer’s first years in prison between 1849 and 1850, i.e. the period he spent in the Criminal-Gebäude of Vienna and in the dungeon of Olmiitz. In addition to the physical description of the prisons the study describes the formation and composition of the “prisoner-society” in Olmiitz. Although Rómer’s letters from the captivity give a vivid picture of the general conditions and the activities of the prisoners, the strict censorship limits their usability for the reconstruction of the relationships within the captivity. On the other hand, the memoirs of József Barsi, Lajos Földy, Ágoston Tóth and Lajos Zámbelly are excellent sources for gaining a picture of the prisoners’ survival strategies, the news making their way to the prison and the “illegal” ways of getting in touch with the outside world. The reconstruction of Rómer’s experiences in the captivity can be a model for the reconstruction of the prison-years of other, less documented personalities. Róbert Hermann
