Dékány Ferenc: "Nálam a tett az eszmétől csak kis lépésnyire fekszik…"

ARRABONA 2013. 51. TANULMÁNYOK “For me deed is only a little step away from idea.. FLOWS RÖMER THE BENEDICTINE TEACHER After a long period of silence Flóris Ferenc Römer is considered by the public as a great pioneer of the Hungarian history of art and archaeology. Far less know is the fact - however - that he was seriously interested in natural sciences in the first half of his career. His scientific knowledge later enriched his work in the field of humanities with the advantage of the positivist and ecological perspective. This presentation introduces Römer as a Benedictine teacher and a scientist with the conclusion that Rómer’s example as a Benedictine teacher calls our attention to several important issues, first of all, to the importance of knowledge and the diligent work without which no genuine results can be achieved; secondly, to the importance of the personal and professional relation of a teacher to his student (e.g. Rómer’s connection with Ferenc Ebenhöch); finally, to the fact that the ethical firmness and patriotism is more important than the career. (This paper is an edited version of the speech held at the Czuczor Gergely Benedictine Grammar-School of Győr on 10th April 2015.) Ferenc Dékány 348
