Galambos István: Rómer Flóris természettudományos munkássága

ARRABONA 2013. 51. TANULMÁNYOK FLÓRIS RÓMER’S SCIENTIFIC WORK At the beginning of his career as a teacher of Hungarian and Latin languages in the Benedictine Arch-Grammar School of Győr Flóris Römer did not remained at the humanistic studies, but, possessing wider scale of interest, he began to enlarge the natural historical collection of the school, and soon he began to teach natural history as well. This interest of his helped to guide his early career (teaching natural history at school and at the Academy of Pozsony; his job as a private tutor at noble families; the compilation of “The natural historical and archaeological framework of the Bakony Mountains”). This latter helped him to become a corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. In his inaugural (1861) he summarised his natural historical results, but already from the perspective of the humanities: he presented the geographical conditions of the medieval Hungary. It was the swan song of his natural historical work: afterwards his interest was occupied by only historical, archaeological and art historical issues. The present study reviews his scientific results encompassing the efforts of almost a generation-long period. Dr. István Galambos
