UNKNOWN PAINTER: GERARD SAGREDO AS A CARMELITE MONK

(restoration report)

The coat of paint of the painting rediscovered in 2009 started to run down. The picture was damaged and highly contaminated, so it required an urgent restoration (Fig. 1-3.). The previous photo-technical and x-ray-radiographic pictures indicated that the painting was repainted (Fig. 7-8.), thus the aim of the restoration was to restore the original version. The presence of the artificial mercuric sulphide in the original paint material suggests that the painting probably dates back to the early 18th century and the repainting occurred at the end of 19th century. The author restored the painting in compliance with the international standards under the supervision of Katalin Görbe and Péter Menráth (Fig. 16).
