THE “OUTLINES” OF THE TEMPLAR PRECEPTORUM OF KERESZTÉNY IN THE MIRROR OF ARCHIVAL SOURCES AND EUROPEAN PARALLELS

The Order of Temple applied its successful European business policy based on the so called commanderium (commandery), which consisted of closely situated estates and convents, even in its Hungarian district.

Based on the surviving documents and the contemporary parallel European developments the history, dimensions and operation of the preceptorium (preceptory) situated in Keresztény in Sopron County could partly be reconstructed. The settlement was possibly procured by the Templars at the beginning of the 1220s. In 1235 at the latest other four villages - Bő, Damonya, Lőcs and Salaysaf?) were granted to the Templars. Based on the structure of the English and French preceptories it is possible that the closely situated estates were placed under the management of the commandery in Keresztény. The preceptory might have remained in the hands of the Templars until the dissolution of the order in 1312 and it was taken over by the Hospitallers.
